This morning, I joined 213 other members of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in signing a letter that asks the United States Senate leadership to take immediate action on bipartisan gun safety legislation.
The letter (https://bit.ly/2YLJrhR) urges Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to call Senate members back to Washington for votes on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019 and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019.
H.R. 8 would establish new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties, and H.R. 1112 would strengthen the background check procedures. Both bills have been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
Quick passage of these bills is a critical step to reducing gun violence in our country. Already in 2019, there have been over 250 mass shootings. The tragic events in El Paso and Dayton are just the latest reminders that we must demand change. The Senate needs to return to Washington and take immediate action on bipartisan gun safety legislation.
Feeling safe in your community should be a right in this country, not a privilege. We have to work together to ensure that Washington takes immediate and meaningful action to ensure the safety of the people they represent.
I encourage you to write Utah’s Republican senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney to ask them to vote for the legislation.
Remember: they work for you.

Topic: Gun Reform
Sample message: Dear Sen. Lee/Sen. Romney,
I am writing to urge you to support expanded background checks to reduce gun violence in the United States. As your constituent, I am begging you to vote to close the deadly loopholes in our laws that make it too easy for dangerous people to get guns.
Background checks are supported by over 90% of all Americans and are a common-sense tool for keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill. Background checks on gun sales are the most effective way to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people and help save lives.
It’s time to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country. Thank you for doing what is right for the people of Utah and the United States.
