Welcoming Week

Salt Lake City has a message for the world:

You are welcome here.

In what may feel like extraordinary times of challenges and polarizing politics, residents of the Capital City are standing up for their neighbors and affirming that our city and country is a place for everyone. Regardless of where you are from or what you look like, you contribute to the vibrant diversity that we value and protect.

It was only a few generations ago that refugees fleeing religious persecution came to the Salt Lake Valley in search of a new life. They built new homes and a community to live as they saw fit, creating opportunity and hope for the future.

That hope is still alive today. Whether you are a long-time resident or a new American, Salt Lake City recognizes your unique ideas, perspectives, and contributions. With over 60,000 refugees living in the State of Utah, and over 34,000 immigrants in Salt Lake City, our communities know that through diversity we thrive economically, socially, and culturally.

More than ever, it is important for our communities to show that they are welcoming to everyone, including refugees and immigrants. To reaffirm our commitment, Salt Lake City will once again participate in Welcoming Week.

Welcoming Week takes place September 15-24, 2017. It serves as an annual celebration to highlight the contributions of immigrants and refugees, and the role communities play in welcoming everyone. Last year alone, over 50,000 people celebrated Welcoming Week across 150 communities. Through a variety of local events, workshops, and film screenings, residents are invited to celebrate, get involved, and meet their neighbors.
