Fresher breakfast right at your doorstep, as POST starts construction on a giant distribution center near SLC’s Northwest Quadrant


POST Consumer Brands, the nation’s third-largest cereal company, is expanding their distribution operations to Salt Lake City’s far west side, at a site near the newly announced Northwest Quadrant development project.

Construction has begun on the $50-million facility, which will cover an area of 901,000 square feet on California Avenue (1300 South) and 5600 West. It is the largest build-to-suit project in Utah history, and will create nearly 100 manufacturing and distribution jobs.

POST currently has a facility in Box Elder County, and is looking forward to expanding into one of the nation’s most promising development sites in decades.

“We are excited to be partnering with Freeport West and Salt Lake City as one of the first major developments near the Northwest Quadrant of the City,” said Linda Fisher, director of corporate communications for POST Consumer Brands. “This area truly represents the Crossroads of the West, opening up great distribution opportunities for our company, coupled with a first-class quality of life to our employees.”

On December 5th, Mayor Jackie Biskupski announced a robust, two-year project that will incorporate infrastructure, zoning recommendations, and marketing plans leading to the development of 3,640 acres of space on the city’s northwest side, with access from 1-80 at 5600 West and 7200 West. No other city in the United States has this much developable land within 10 minutes of an international airport, major highway interchange, and national rail crossings.

Plans for the Northwest Quadrant also include the preservation of nearly 4,000 acres of open space, supporting protection of birdlife and wildlife that flourish in the area.

POST company officials were on a tight timeline for the project, and city economic development experts were ready to support their needs.

“As we began working with POST, it was clear to us that they had a tight timeline for this project. Our team worked closely with the City’s permitting department to provide POST with the customer service they needed to make this deal happen,” said Economic Development Director Lara Fritts. “POST will undoubtedly set the precedent for the types of high-quality companies that meet the City’s goals and vision.”

In partnership with POST Holding Company, Freeport West will be building an additional one million square feet of industrial development in Salt Lake City, said Freeport West President Bradley J. Ross. “This development is the first, of what we hope, is many future opportunities in and around the Northwest Quadrant area of Salt Lake City. We look forward to working with the Mayor Biskupski and the City Council on this and many other projects.”
